OH, THE FOOD! Upon walking in, our table was completely FULL of delicious appetizers.

It surprised us that such a luxury place could exist in a strip mall -the marble walls, gold statues, and Modernist art create such a VIP upscale environment. Mercy, Shukran.We came here for the New Year's dinner/event and we loved our FANTASTIC experience, from the neverending delicious food to the classy disco floor that had us dancing all night long. Say hello to an old friend and meet someone new. Walk around and watch, but also enjoy each other’s company. Thank you for taking the time to experience aspects of American culture through art. With that, I want to once again tell you how happy I am to host you here this evening. These three paintings remind me of what President Biden said last year – that as a nation we need to “make equality and justice part of what we do today, tomorrow and every day.” And these paintings also remind me that the work continues today – the importance of working toward racial equality, to be sure, but also gender equality and the inclusion of people with disabilities. But they also represent a spirit to overcome seemingly impossible trials and tribulations. These incredibly brave, smart, courageous Americans highlight the most grim period in American history, one that resonates to this day. I also hope you see some very special paintings in the dining room, My college classmate Tim Nielsen portrayed these three famous American abolitionists – Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. My stepfather Norm Buccanica’s sculpture “Easter,” brings back childhood memories of growing up in North Dakota and shines as a symbol of renewal. Kathleen Stafford, an American who worked at the International School here for some years, paints beautiful watercolors with distinctly West African themes, including the Chinguetti Mosque.

My former neighbor Jim Walker, a professional photographer at the Smithsonian, took ten awe-inspiring photographs of the Washington DC area, showing the grandeur of the American capital both inside and out. My home states of Minnesota and North Dakota are beautifully illustrated in landscapes by Harriet Rosenbaum and Reginald Marsh. I selected pieces of art for this exhibition that were personal to me. They display the beauty and strength of both the countries. Today we are showcasing 20 pieces of art that were created specifically for this residence, with the US-Mauritania relationship in mind. My hope is that those who have never been to the United States can personally experience the depth and breadth of our artistic heritage and values.
